A Glossary Of Cemetery Terms
BURIAL - Interment by placement in a grave.
COLUMBARIUM - An arrangement of niches to hold cremation urns. These niches may be located either indoors or outdoors and are generally fronted by glass, marble or granite.
CRYPT - A space in a building or below ground structure used for the entombment of human remains.
ENTOMBMENT - Interment by placement in a crypt either above or below ground.
GRAVE LINER (GRAVE BOX) - An unsealed concrete receptacle of two or more pieces in which the casket is placed at the time of burial, not specifically to protect the casket, but to prevent the ground above from sinking.
INTERMENT SERVICE - Those services involved preparing the interment site for use. Generally include such items as opening & closing the burial site, staff supervision, establishment and maintenance a permanent burial records and the use of necessary equipment and accessories.
INURNMENT - Interment by placement of cremated remains in an urn in a grave, crypt, or niche.
MAUSOLEUM - A building to house crypts. A mausoleum may be for a single personal crypt, or a building of many crypts.
MEMORIAL - The item of structure used to mark the place where an interment has or will be made, or serving to preserve remembrance and includes such terms as monument, marker, tombstone, tablet, shutter, headstone, foot stone or niche plate.
NICHE - A space in a columbarium, mausoleum, or other structure used for the inurnment of cremated remains.
VAULT - A two piece sealed receptacle for additional protection of the casket and contents.
